*** Press quotes ***

The Sleeping Shaman:

“Is anyone familiar with the story behind The Who’s “Pictures Of Lily”? Basically the protagonist of the song is having trouble sleeping so his dad gives him a picture (Lily) which he uses to wank himself to sleep for want of a better expression. It turns out he falls in love with Lily and asks his dad where he can find her…only to be told she’s been dead for 40 years. The release of this 7” from Ireland’s Howlin’ Widow is a little like that picture, only minus the wanking. One listen and I was hooked and intent on checking out more by the band only to find that they split last year!!! God damn!!! It’s a real shame as this is a real find!!!

Howlin’ Widow dig deep into the acid laced, blues drenched rifferama of the 70’s bringing to mind bands such as Budgie, Leafhound and Sir Lord Baltimore as both tracks pile riff upon riff and switch from balls out to rock to a crashing groove with consummate ease. Sitting on top of the scathing riffs vocalist Tom Clarke wails and howls with throat ripping passion sounding equal parts Sir Lord Baltimore’s John Garner, Church Of Misery’s Neggi and Sixty Watt Shaman’s Dan Soren.

Now, if only I’d found this band a couple of years ago!!!”

Hellride Music Forums:

“…lights up the cosmic void with a sun burnt, fried brain riff romp that fires off the same kind of psychedelic, sonic projectiles as Captain Beyond. There’s a jazzy, flexible drum performance interstellar course graciously altered by thicker, nastier doom-blues grooves that jettison solar melody particles in exchange for planetary girth. Clarke howls with a belting set of lungs that bring to mind a number of my favorite vocalists all hacked up and meticulously glued back together (Garcia, Danzig, Ward, and Liebling come to mind)…. and reaches nuclear levels of soul and melodic aggression, the latent brimstone shower in the sky mutated into a world ending spectacle by a series of his screaming highs and deep rasps… If you call yourself a fan of the unholy riff, you must have this…PERIOD. It’s just a damn travesty that the band seems to have broken up. At least they went out with a helluva big bang.”

Cosmic Lava:

“You better quit while you're ahead - this could be the slogan of HOWLIN' WIDOW. Considering the fact that HOWLIN' WIDOW was an amazingly talented band, it is indeed a shame they broke-up. Tom Clarke’s voice superbly complements the filthy, blues-infused riffs of the two guitarists Gary Spence and Jason Hendry, while the machine-precise rhythm section comprising of bassist Dave Boyd and drummer Tony Murray provides the additional punch… It is a pure pleasure to listen to the two previous unreleased cuts on this 7”. Everything about this strictly limited 7" from the song writing to the musicianship to the vocals to the production - is top notch. HOWLIN' WIDOW, I will miss you!”

Ripple Music:

“Tones of modern doom drape over this kicking 7" of retro-metal like a funeral drape, clothing the massive riffs with the atmosphere of something dangerous. Freak Flag Recordings has released this killer 7" in very limited numbers, so race over and see if they have any left. If huge retro, fuzzed out, powerful metal riffs with wailing vocals are your thing (like they are mine) you may have just received your latest manna from heaven.”
